CALL FOR ENTRIES LONDON ARTISTS’ STUDIO TOUR 2012

Applicants must be professional working artists with exhibition experience living in the city of London. All media are acceptable. Artists must have accessible studio space able to accommodate up to 300 people going through in one weekend. Artists must be present in their studio for the duration of the tour. The dates for tour are April 14, 15 & 16, 2012.

Deadline for submissions is October 31, 2011.

Submission package must include:

10 slides or a CD of 10 jpg images that are representative of the work you are intending to show – slides must be marked with the artist’s name and have a red dot on the lower left corner of the slide frame.
A printed list of your slides or jpg images indicating the title, media, size & year.
An accurate hand-drawn or computer-generated map of your location in London.
An Artist Statement &/or CV that tells about your artistic practice and exhibition history.
A stamped, self addressed envelope suitable for the return of your material.

London Artists’ Studio Tour, 15 Antrim Crescent, London, Ont N6E 1G1

The Studio Tour is a juried event. Each year the jury strives to achieve a fresh and interesting mix of new and returning artists and to include artists working in a variety of media. The only work that may be shown at any studio during the tour is that of artists accepted by the jury. At least 80 per cent of the work on display must be originals. No more than 20 per cent can be giclee prints or other mechanical reproductions.

New applicants should be prepared for a studio visit as part of the jurying process.

Applicants will be informed of the jury’s decision by mid-December 2011. A participation fee of $200 per artist is payable upon acceptance by the jury.

All participants/ studios must have personal liability insurance during the tour – house insurance alone does not provide adequate coverage.

About the Show at Sunset Arts Gallery in Grand Bend

A collection of “Drawings”. Black and white, with a small splash of colour. The human form, architecture and golf. Traditional figure drawing has always been a favourite subject of Cheryl. The human body is truly a magnificent work of art.
In August of 2007, Cheryl spent two weeks in a converted medieval monastery in Limoux, in the picturesque Lanquedoc area of Southern France. She loved the medieval towns and hilltop villages with their rich history and amazing architecture. When she returned home, she began to take more notice of the wonderful architecture right in southwestern Ontario. Sometimes you have to travel half way around the world to really appreciate and notice whats right here.

Another favourite subject or obsession... is golf. For Cheryl, golf is not just about the landscape, it's about combining the figure, history and landscape elements together in a piece of artwork. Golf is truly about respect for your fellow players, the game and the environment.

About the Artist

Cheryl Radford currently lives and works in London, Ontario. She grew up on a farm just outside Londesboro in Huron County. Starting with a diploma in Fine Arts, she went on to work in the graphic arts industry for many years, but recently made the switch back to the fine arts.
With 3 part time jobs; London Potters Guild: Program Administrator, Art Rental & Sales Gallery: Gallery Assistant and Keys by Troy: Bookkeeper, Cheryl spends allot of time doing detailed work at a computer. To Cheryl, one of the real joys is the simple act of drawing. Time to draw, is really an escape from the complicated computerized world. Cheryl believes drawing is the cornerstone of all visual art and there is nothing wrong with being known as an artist who draws. She considers drawing to be a primary medium, not a preliminary sketch for a painting, sculpture or another medium.

“I draw inspiration from all that life has to offer; a variety of people, work, the seemingly ordinary natural surroundings right here in London, to going away golfing at pristine golf courses. In the words of George Bernard Shaw: Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.”

Fractured Painting Workshops

Hilda Markson Gray - Fractured Painting Workshops

This is a favourite way for me to paint. The paper is divided into segments (or fractures) and then we begin to add our imagery. The colours and/or values change as the imagery moves from fracture to fracture. The resulting painting is rich in complexity of colour and imagery. Glazing of pigment over pigment creates great depth of colour.

For students new to this process-I will walk you through this process step by step. I will provide a theme for you. We will be working with a rectangle within a rectangle.

For students who are familiar with this process -will be further challenged to bring a "theme" idea. Themes that have been used in the past have been - the seashore, garden sculpture, birds, fish, flowers, the orchard, bird houses, toys, etc. Please bring photo references

Artist’s Statement

“The success of my artwork fully depends on my passion for what I am painting. When artists create from passion it always shows through in their work. It’s like looking into someone’s soul and when you connect to that work it reflects a part of your soul back to you.”

Profile

Though I started out working with watercolour, in the past few years I have made a shift to experimenting with regular and fluid acrylics and textured mediums. The shift in mediums and subjects from representational to semi-representational to abstract, has been a welcome departure allowing me to experience a full range of perception in my work.

I continue to be “wowed” by nature drawing inspiration from compositions, colours and values that I see. So not surprisingly, the advice I give out the most is, “Never leave home without your camera, sketchbook or pencils”.

Pat began painting, with a passion in 1998. She has always had a great love of Nature, in all its’ seasons. She tries to capture this and convey it to the viewer through her watercolours, pen and ink and collages.

Pat attends workshops regularly and attributes much of her enthusiasm to her teachers, Fred Harrison, Peter Lam, Jacquie Wojtowich and Hilda Markson Gray.

In 2008 Pat studied in the south of France in Limoux, with Linda Kemp, watercolourist and author of “Painting Outside the Line”

Pat is an active member of The Brush and Palette Club, The Gallery Group, The Lambeth Art Association and Focus on Art Group. She exhibits in local shows regularly.

I was born in Windsor and raised in London, Ontario, a city I love. I wasn’t able to acquire a formal art education but I’ve always had a love for art

I’ve been retired for 11 years and that has allowed me many more hours to pursue this craft – in particular watercolours. I began to paint in 1994 and I’ve taken many classes to try to improve. I enjoy painting architecture and have painted several portraits of houses for clients. I’ve also been successful in painting landscapes and flowers.

I’ve been a member of the Lambeth Art Association as well as a member of the Brush & Palette Club for several years. I’ve displayed and sold my work in shows presented by both groups and in other venues.

The process of personal development in the visual arts, and I believe any art, is a journey of discovery. Nature is my source and my of inspiration. I am a field naturalist and bird watcher, who finds inspiration in the woods where all is present. By all, I mean life and death, peace and chaos, beauty and ugliness, insight and mystery. It is a place to rest and reflect on the old as well as a place to explore and discover something new. Every artist chooses a subject that speaks to him or her. Nature is mine.

To create an image, I use the tools, techniques, and mediums that I have experienced and developed over the years. Like most artists, my aim is to use the elements of design at my disposal to develop artworks that draw people into them and offer a true and lasting connection. With a passion for sketching and a love for colour, London artist, Mary-Anne Watson, often finds herself with pen in hand, rendering an image onto a coloured backdrop.

In my travels, I carry a journal, pen and small watercolour set, capturing the sights and scenes and sometimes even a story onto it's pages, then , I create them onto greeting cards and paintings. I enjoy painting Plein Air and love being in touch with nature, but often, time is a luxury and I then I must refer to photographs back in my art room.

I find watercolours to be my exciting, rewarding niche. I anticipate that something fantastic can happen when you least expect it. I often begin a piece by dropping a few pleasing colours onto a wet sheet of watercolour paper, letting the paint and paper do their work. Once the paper is dry, I turn the page in different directions until I see an image emerging from the interesting shapes. This is where the fun begins. I reach for my pen and begin sketching.

Painting has always been a release for me. It allows me to turn off my analytical left brain and explore my creative side. I became interested in art at a very early age and although I consider myself as a self-taught artist, I have had the opportunity to take drawing, painting and colour theory workshops with a variety of instructors. I am currently a member of the Lambeth Art Association and enjoy getting together to paint and exchange artist tips with many of the talented members.

My greeting cards and paintings are predominantly watercolour but more recently, I have pursued painting still life with oils. I initially painted in oils many years ago, so coming back to it now has been like a reunion with an old friend. I like to explore many mediums, as they say, you never stop learning, "knowledge is power and enthusiasm pulls the switch"

New work by Sarah Cowling

August 31-September 11, 2010 at The ARTS Project

Sarah Cowling has been working with acrylics for about 12 years. This exhibit is the culmination of much experimenting and playing with the paint. The flow of the paint is important to these works as all are poured, either directly onto the support or after the application of some kind of texture (from cheesecloth to acrylic mediums). During the pouring of the paint, some guidance of the flow may occur by moving or tipping of the support. The paintings are luminous and abstract with a feeling of depth and motion.

Sarah has a BA in History and Classics, a B. of Ed. and has participated in visual arts workshops and private classes. Sarah is a member of the Brush and Palette Club, the Gallery Painting Group and the Lambeth Art Association. She has taught art classes for The Arts Project and Museum London from 2009-2010 and gives art tours at Museum London with the Tour Guides. The Downtown Woodstock Business Improvement Area is busy planning for our annual SUMMER STREET FEST, which will be held on Thursday, Friday and Saturday August 5th, 6th & 7th, 2010.

During these three days, Dundas Street in Downtown Woodstock will be closed off to vehicular traffic and transformed into a huge street festival. Street Fest runs from 9:00am until 9:00pm on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

We continually look for different ways to grow our Annual Summer Street Fest making it an annual “must attend” and delivering an enjoyable experience for festival-goers to Downtown Woodstock. As we are constantly expanding our festival, endeavouring to tap into a growing market with culture and the arts, we hope that more artisans will join us in our annual street festival.

Ella Ogglesby enjoyed visual arts classes in Secondary School and was inspired by visits to European Art Galleries while on school trips. She began attending evening classes in painting as an adult. She has been a member of the Lambeth Art Association for many years. She has taken two University level fine art courses and attends weekly painting classes. Her artwork is often displayed at the Art Rental Center and Sales Gallery at Museum London and the annual Lambeth Art Show. She has received many awards at local juried art shows for her watercolour paintings.

The 38th Annual Show and Sale by the Lambeth Art Asoociation was held April 22 to 24, 2010 at the Lambeth United Church. It is truly amazing to see hundreds of paintings arrive, then, within a few short hours the doors open to this amazing show. An art lovers feast. From traditional to contemparary, oils to mixed media, there was something for everyone.

Many thanks to all members who made the whole show happen. This kind of show does not happen without alot of manpower and dedication by members.... very talented members I must add.

"I'm gathering artists from around Ontario, for an ecclectic and unique flavour for this quaint location in the country. It will be a small show, of about 30 artists. We have already got some local papers and tv spots planned for coverage, and hope our first year will be grand.

We are looking for affordable creations that are unique. who isn't?!

It will take place at my studio, with indoor & outdoor spaces available. Entry is only $110 for the Saturday & Sunday, being the first year.

Some of the proceeds will go to a friend of mine's project. Judy Sieffert is a retired teacher and has founded a wonderful school in Nicaragua teaching english and computer skills. She does great work there. We thought that a schoolhouse should raise funds for a schoolhouse! "

My paintings mirror my inner life, serving as an ongoing journal without words. For me, painting is a means to access feelings, sensations and information buried in my subconscious. This spirit within, forces me to move through this life with greater stillness, awareness and compassion.

I paint, because it brings order to the chaos of my life. Through my creative process, it enables me to bring concrete thoughts onto the canvas through color, texture and light. I am proud to share my creative vision with an audience, as I understand that it is an authentic communication; grounded in real values and experience. I love to paint onto canvas or paper in unconventional ways. My works are very personal pieces that are inspired by the people and the things that surround me. My art, like morality, consists of drawing the line somewhere.

I enjoy the challenge and complexities of Watercolors, Acrylics and Oils. It encourages me to take the unconventional and uncompromising road to having faith in my own abilities and to nurture my visionary creative spirit.

Joanna Gooder enjoys wood carving and painting. At present she paints in Watercolour and Acrylic. Her painting mainly lends itself to the “Fantasy” side with a humorous view of life. Paintings in this whimsical style, depicting Historic and well known Strathroy buildings, can be seen at the Dale Wurfel car dealership in Strathroy, Ontario. Presently she enjoys taking kitchen and bar subjects and presents them in a bright and colourful off-beat way. She is a member of the Lambeth Art Association and Associate Member of the Portside Gallery in Port Stanley.

Bring your easels, paints and find a spot among the historic buildings, beautiful parks or scenic beach area. Also, submit your finished masterpieces for the “Loving Bayfield” Exhibit Opening Aug 22-10 (more details to come).

Lois Covington Fuchs is a pastel artist from the U.S. who retired to London in 2003. She has been working in pastels for over 20 years, and has a "midlife crisis" fine arts degree in painting and printmaking. while she has worked in many mediums, she prefers the immediacy of pastels for both painting and drawing.

Susan, although primarily self taught, has studied with many local artists and attended workshops given by various regional artists offered by The Gallery Painting Group, The Lambeth Art Association and The Brush and Palette Club. Susan has also attended courses in plein air painting at Southampton Art School and Killarney and courses offered by the University of Western Ontario Continuing Studies Department. She has served on the executive of both The Gallery Painting Group and the Brush and Palette Club. She is a member of The Central Ontario Art Association.

I work in primarily in watercolour. My goal is to express the spirit of the place I am painting and, while I am influenced by local colour, colours are changed, exaggerated or subdued in order to accomplish my goal. Light and shadow and the values they create are also used as vehicles to intensify my interpretation of the spirit of the place. Many of my paintings are done plein air, or are inspired by plein air sessions.

Painting provides me with an excuse to play outside all day, to travel with friends, to make new ones, and to share my love of nature with those who see my work.

A different kind of art show
JASS London a Juried Art Show and Sale is looking for artists

London, ON, September 2, 2009 – A $500 prize is being awarded for the first time in the history of the Volunteer Committee to Museum London organizing art shows. This year’s show, JASS London, a juried art show and sale, will open in Museum London and online at the same time. JASS London opens in the Community Gallery at Museum London at noon on Thursday, October 22 and will run to Sunday, October 25, gallery hours. There will be both a physical paper catalogue and an on-line catalogue. Works of art may be purchased on-line or in person. Prizes will be announced at JASS, Java and Jazz on Friday, October 23 at Museum London and on-line at the same time. The Best in Show prize is $500. Eric Atkinson, the Honorary Chair, will also be presenting an Honorary Chair’s Prize. Eric Atkinson also created the wonderful image that use see above for the JASS London poster.

Artists may submit a maximum of two pieces of art. All work must be submitted online before October 2. The maximum size for the work, if it is 2-dimensional is 40" by 50" or 2000 square inches. The rules are explained fully on the website www.jasslondon.ca. The works are submitted by the artists to the JASS London website. The works are compiled into a database from which the jury will select the works to be displayed. The final judging for prizes takes place once the paintings have been hung on the wall. The members of the jury are Ihor Holubizky, Madeline Lennon, and Kim Moodie.

The only mission of the Volunteer Committee to Museum London is to raise funds for the purchase of works of art for Museum London. In order to accomplish this the Volunteer Committee to Museum London operates The Gallery Shop, the Art Rental and Sales Gallery, Art and Travel tours, and we operate special projects such as JASS London, JASS, Java & Jazz, and The Wearable Art Show this fall. The Volunteer Committee to Museum London is a registered charitable organization.

GPG Show and Sale

Join the members of the Gallery Painting Group for their Annual Show and Sale at the Bryon Memorial Library from October 22 to 24th. This group of artists gets together and paints and draws at various locations in and around London from May until October. When you work outside you learn to work quickly as lighting/weather changes which in turn changes everything you see. It is pleasant challenge to work outsite and appreciate the natural beauty of the landscape and surroundings.

2 Models, I night

On Thursday, June 11th at The ARTS Project (203 Dundas Street, London) from 7-10 pm There will be a special 2 Models 1 Night - a unique opportunity to draw 2 models posing simultaneously.

The night will consist of a variety of timed poses from 1 minute gestures to an 1 hour-long pose at the end.

There's a sign up sheet for this at the box office at TAP. If you sign up before Thursday night with money, it's only $12! Otherwise, it is $15 at the door.

Cheryl enjoys drawing from life, whether it is classical figure drawing or plein air. Sight, sound, temperature and atmosphere all contribute to the impression of the figure or landscape. Her creations may or may not accurately represent a specific person or place. She believes that drawing is the cornerstone of all visual art and there is nothing wrong with "being known as an artist who draws". Cheryl's other favourite subject (or maybe obsession) is golf. Golf is not just about the landscape, it's about combining figurature, history and landscape elements together.

Light and shadow and the exquisite and sometimes subtle way it affects everything around me is the essence of my portraits, still lifes and landscapes. I want to paint it then I can own it. A native of Chatham Ontario, I was presented my first set of Winsor Newton paints at the age of seven and have carried on a love affair with art since.

Sarah has been painting for about 10 years. Sarah’s education consists of a B.A. in History, a B.of Ed., and she has attended a number of art classes through UWO and Fanshawe College, and assorted private workshops. She likes to use acrylics, often adding images and words from magazines as well as found materials to create a collage. Her works are comments on history, the world around us and the quirks of human nature. Sarah is a member of the Brush and Palette Club, the Gallery Painting Group, the Lambeth Art Association and a founding member of XM .CA ( a mixed media group). 2009 Annual Show & Sale

37th Annual Show and Sale
April 23 to 25, 2009

What words can I use to describe the show? Inspiring, motivating, refreshing, stimulating and overwhelming, come to mind. It truly was an incredible array of artwork by the members of a very talented Lambeth Art Association. The approximately 800 works of art, varied in style, size, medium and price. Original artwork was available matted and / or framed. Mediums included oils, acrylics, mixed media, watercolour, ink and graphite.

For the opening night on Thursday, art lovers, guest and artists were wall to wall. There was a steady stream of guests on both Friday and Saturday. Thank you to all that attended. Hope to see you again next year.

A total of 72 artists submitted artwork. Congratulations to those who sold work. Its great to see a membership with so many members willing to volunteer and fill the various roles at the show. As a relatively new member, volunteering to help out was an easy and social way to get to know other members.

A special thanks to all the conveyors and organizers of the show. All of their hard work and dedication is appreciated. The 37th annual show and sale of the Lambeth Art Association was great!
